Stamped In History - the Signet Ring

Signet Rings have a rich historical legacy, tracing back centuries to their prominence in ancient Greece, Rome, and other ancient civilisations. Notably, these rings were even discovered among the artefacts of the pharaohs in ancient Egypt. Traditionally, signet rings were intricately engraved with a family crest or royal emblem, serving as official seals or symbols of status. Commonly worn on the pinky finger of the non-dominant hand, they were a hallmark of influence and elevated social standing.

Over time, the function of signet rings underwent evolution. During the Renaissance era, married couples adopted signet rings bearing intertwined initials to symbolise their union.

With the rise in literacy during the 19th century, signet rings gradually shifted away from business purposes. Instead, they became cherished heirlooms passed down through generations, embodying one's heritage and personal narrative. Initially associated with men, the 1920s and 1930s witnessed the trend of women donning signet rings adorned with white, green, and violet stones, symbolising their quest for suffrage.

The aristocratic accessory

More recently, the Signet Ring has become popular among royalty and families with rich histories. Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle, Pippa Middleton, and Charles III are all known to wear signet rings on their pinky fingers.

In other circles, celebrities such as Brad Pitt, Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne have also been seen sporting Signet Rings, replacing the traditional crest with engraved initials or precious stones. Once symbols of aristocracy and heritage, they're now an essential accessory for style icons around the world.
